Research Collaboration in Leading-Edge TechnologiesCentral to the Science and Technology Centers' (STCs) knowledge transfer program is active collaboration with industry in research. In several situations, industrial and academic scientists have collaborated on joint projects, each bringing specialized skills and perspectives. Industry scientists work with STC researchers, faculty, and students to learn about and exchange developing and existing technologies and methods. The centers are useful sources of knowledge and technology because their research focuses on broad industry needs. The pre-competitive research of the centers and accessibility of STC-developed technology to industry creates an accommodating environment for industries to receive knowledge. Frequently, industrial collaboration with STC researchers leads to new commercial products or technologies. Collaboration also serves as a basis for extending industry research into areas that are generally too risky and time-consuming to be explored within the private sector. The diversity of collaborative research opportunities within the STCs provides a comprehensive approach to industrial research needs. Specific industry needs are anticipated through centers with research goals for these targeted industries. Certain industries show promise for economic growth due to emerging technologies in these fields. Fields for growth include electronics, high-performance computing, materials, superconductors, optics, and biotechnology and biomedical imaging. Other targeted fields with importance to industry are environmental management and natural disaster prediction. The STCs span an impressively wide intellectual landscape, ranging from the understanding of the mechanisms of cognition, the exploration of the fundamental frontiers of the universe or the atom, to basic developments in material sciences, computers, and biotechnology.
