CRPC's Linda Torczon Wins Top 20 Houston Women in Technology Award

CRPC Executive Director Linda Torczon has been named one of this year's Top 20 Houston Women in Technology by the Houston Chapter of the Association for Women in Computing (AWC). She will receive the award at a presentation held at the Houston Double Tree Hotel on June 11, 1999 at 6:30 p.m.

Recipients of the award were selected on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Works in the Houston metropolitan area
  • Has at least 10 years in the computer industry or academics
  • Provides a positive role model for women
  • Shows significant career accomplishments
  • Is in upper management or has tenure

Torczon, a Rice University graduate with a B.S. in chemical engineering (1980), M.S. in computer science (1984), and Ph.D. in computer science (1985), is a Research Scientist in the Rice Computer Science Department. She has been instrumental in developing new methods and systems in the areas of code generation, interprocedural data-flow analysis and optimization, and programming environments. She is co-holder of a patent involving digital computer register allocation and code spilling, has published numerous technical papers, and is an active member of several professional societies.

Torczon has served as the CRPC Executive Director since 1990, managing extensive research efforts, education and outreach programs, and technology transfer. She has been involved in a variety of activities to increase the number of women and underrepresented minorities entering mathematics and science-related fields, including K-12 training programs for teachers, and workshops that encourage students to pursue careers in technical fields.

The AWC is a not-for-profit organization for information technology professionals. The Houston Chapter's mission is to provide for the technical professional development of computing specialists and to provide a formidable network that is a source of education, expert information, and career opportunities for its members.
